Vegetable cache

There is nothing better than retrieving  little cache of vegetables from the garden!

Runner beans are doing really well this year and this is the biggest kohlrabi I have yet grown at 1.5Ibs!

Inspired by this week’s – one a week photo challenge – cache

What do you do with the kohlrabi? I first met one in Ohio, and didn’t like what my boyfriend at the time did with it. Now don’t ask how he cooked it, it’s been years, but he wasn’t very talented at cooking to put it kindly…

This evening I just baked it as oven was on, drizzled in olive oil and black pepper, but I also steam it and serve with black pepper (and butter if you can take it). It is actually nicest raw – that’s how the kids like it best, either on it’s own or in a salad.

Has the crunch and texture of celeriac but with nutty cabbage flavour as opposed to nutty celery flavour of celeriac, if that makes sense.

Yes it is funny this summer, I have some kale and chard growing wonderfully well inbetween lots of wild flowers. As a lot of the garden is wild this summer I have had no trouble of slugs. My runner beans though are only flowering now!
