Finally, we have reached the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. At least things will start going the right direction now. Some serene images to celebrate. Happy Solstice to everyone and special thanks to our Lens Artists host for providing some great challenges throughout 2021 including this one.

Winter has finally come to it’s shortest day. From here things will start to get lighter.

I always find these dark winter days tough going but now with days of festive cheer ahead, I can see brightness ahead.

• 

For a little while, let us forget all the uncertainty that lays before us. And enjoy this coming Holiday Season. The sun will rise tomorrow and for that I am grateful.

Today, the 21st December is the Winter Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere. Finally day length will start going the right way. We’ve had a grey few weeks and have not seen much sunshine. But the sun was there briefly this morning just as it rose about 9am only to be swallowed by a bank of cloud.

Today is the winter solstice. It is dark and grey, but thankfully from tomorrow the days will start getting lighter. It is too dark for a photo this morning but here is one from earlier this month.

The shortest day of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere. Thankfully from tomorrow day’s will get longer. The photo is actually from yesterday morning, this mornings sunrise was not so dramatic.

Today is the Winter Solstice and I find myself breathing a sigh of relief. At least from now the days will be getting longer and not shorter. And what is more we have had the sun out for most of the day and I got a lovely walk. This in one of my favourite trees in the neighbourhood – an old ash tree, gnarled and worn with a great cavity. A true elder of our community, who has seen many winter solstices.

Winter Solstice Greetings

Finally the winter solstice. From tomorrow day light will lengthen and there are thoughts of the new growing season to look forward to. Even in the garden there are signs of new beginnings. This daisy, though admittedly closed tight against the elements, was in flower four days ago.
