Yes it is definitely feeling autumnal now. So first this week some apples.
- Crab apples. This tree was packed with blossom earlier in the year and we have some fruits but not as much as other years. They are also a bit scaby.
2. Another apple – this time an eater – a Bardsey. Again very few fruit but one of the few which has fruited this year (we had a very late frost).
3. Chilli peppers in the greenhouse. I just had one plant, but it has a good crop so I will probably dry them.
4. Caterpillar damage on the brassicas – mostly in the polytunnel. The netted beds outside are generally okay.
5. Now this one is puzzling. This is purple sprouting broccoli which isn’t relay supposed to produce broccoli till spring – so is it just very confused or did I plant it too early? I shouldn’t complain though as I will enjoy eating it.
6. And finally two of our seven chicks . They are growing quick.
Those chicks have grown so quickly – morphing into adults!

I know just mini adults now. And like the adults they love bolted lettuce!

Is the Bardsey apple sweet tasting?
A great variety for this six Karina 🙂

Yes the Bardesy is sweet, but it wouldn’t be one of my favourite apples of the varieties we have but this year we don;’t have too much choice:)

Ah, the chicks are no longer fluffy and cute. Do you know whether they are male or female? Good looking chillies! I managed to overwinter one plant and have loads of chillies on it, just beginning to turn red.

We have two males, two we are not sure of and three females. They are still cute though. I wonder if I brought chilli inside would it overwinter?

I brought two plants into my unheated conservatory as they were still fruiting last autumn, one didn’t survive but the other did. I cut it back after harvesting the chillies, and watered it occasionally through the winter. When it came back to life I kept it indoors until it got covered in white fly and then I put it outside. Has done extremely well!

Never heard of Bardsey apples. Are they quite common? I bet the chicks are virtually adults now.

It is a recent enough find– North Wales on the island of Bardsey in the late 90s
