After storms and very wet weather the garden is pretty much sodden. Then last night a sharp frost has left everything frozen solid. It was minus 4.5 degrees Celsius this morning – not often we get it that cold here in the west of Ireland.
- Poor robin was feeling the cold – all fluffed out trying to keep warm. We put extra food out this morning for all the birds.
2. The pond is frozen too. We did a bit of pond maintenance last week – taking out quite a lot of sedges that had spread through the shallower end and bog bean which had taken over half the deep end. It looks quite a bit better.
3. I wonder if the honeysuckle is now regretting send out leaves?
4. The creeping raspberry looks very pretty with its frosted fringe. This is a good ground cover plant but we have never got any fruit from it. The bees do like the flowers though.
5. The poultry were finding it cold this morning too. Nelson (our drake) kept walking a few steps and then sitting down as if he was trying to warm his feet. Junior, the cockerel was crowing standing on one foot.
6. And finally our roof is looking a bit like a green roof at the moment. Possibly because of the really wet winter it seems to have become populated with lots of moss. I don’t really mind – it looks pretty.
Frosty photos are always lovely, and these are no exception. I love a mossy roof, I am sure it is full of bugs and beetles and all good things.

Really enjoyed that little robin fellow and my favorite leaf was the creeping raspberry outlined in frost! I am surprised it gets that cold in Ireland! Is that normal?

No it doesn’t usually get quite this cold, particularly here in the west. Zero or -1 is common enough a few times in the winter. Tonight is to be similarly cold but then it will get a bit warmer. I am told it is good for the apple trees🙂

Is that THE special robin? Poor little thing. Extra food always welcome with a frost as we also had this morning. Love the creeping raspberry.

Yes indeed it is. We have in fact three robins in the garden at the moment but this is the brave one.

I’m impressed you were doing pond maintenance in January. That must have been chilly. Do you need waders?

It is only a relatively small pond (maybe 12 metre square) and we could it from the edges, using long-handed tools like rakes. No need to get into the water thankfully 😊

Oh so wonderful from a land of hot days. The frosty leaves look wonderful. I feel for the poultry and Robin. Your roof is such an ecosystem, love it 🙂

It is an ecosystem alright🙂 Did you get any of the rain storms where you live?

OH yes. Four days of rain and more today. Over 150mls so far this month 🙂

It is a lot but I am sure it is needed. Hopefully many of the fires will be quenched

Yes More than I had for all of last year!!! Yes in my part of Australia the fires are well and truly out. Other parts in the south of the country are still experiencing fire. Feel for them

That is pretty cold for you there! Poor little creatures are wondering what’s up? I hope your new shoots aren’t too damaged. Frost after emergence is so worrisome.

It is a native honeysuckle so I am hoping it is made of tough stuff🙂

I love frost rimed leaves, but we don’t see many down here.

Yes it is cold, it had frozen so hard that everything was still white after 10 o’clock this morning. And then a beautiful sunny day! It was a real Sun day 🙂

One of the lovely advantages of a frosty morning is seeing the sun too.

Yes, we have had two dry sunny days in a row, I think that could be a record for this wet winter🙂

Frost makes everything look so pristine, but as others’ve said, I feel for the birds. Never heard of creeping raspberry before & an image search makes it look really nice, even w/o the frost outline. Is it quick growing?

Yes it is quick and spreads with runners so you so have to keep it cut back.
