This week in the garden, the first cherry tomatoes…….
Last few days have been damp, with plenty rain and falling temperatures. Not sure if we will have enough heat left int he summer to get any decent pumpkins and squashes, which are still very small.
Earlier in the season I had scattered the remains of a wildflower seed packet on a bed and some lovely (rainsoaked) cornflowers came through.
And some pot marigolds. These used to seed themselves all over the vegetable patch but I will have to sow some for next year as I only have the odd plant now.
Also self-seeded is this chicory plant in the poly tunnel. I just love these lovely blue flowers.
And finally, also self-seeded this time among the leek plants are these red veined sorrel plants. They are a nice addition to the salad bowl if harvested young.
Thanks to The Propagator for hosting “Six on Saturday”.
I love Chicory, esp. in a field with Queen Anne’s Lace, so pretty. Those are cute, tiny pumpkins, are they in the poly tunnel or outside? Mine are about 2-3″ but frost is still a ways off, so we might get something worth eating.

I can imagine chicory and Queen’s Anne Lace looks lovely together, it is not a native plant for us. The pumpkins are outside, fingers crossed they grow a bit more:)

I’ve never grown chicory so am not familiar with the flower. It is indeed very pretty. Each of your sixes is glowing with health. Lovely!

Lovely chicory flower and I do like the mini pumpkin though it might not be so good to eat! I scattered some wildflower seeds too in a couple of pots, I’ve got plenty of leaves but no flowers yet so it will be a mystery what comes up.

All lovely. Have always liked cornflowers but what a delight chicory flowers are.

Red-veined sorrel – yummy! I’ve hardly eaten any of mine this year, though. Good to hear you’ve got some squash.

Poor little pumpkin, not sure it’ll make it this year. Do you think the tomatoes are slow to ripen this year? Mine are just coming ripe as well & it seemed I was harvesting a lot sooner last year. Maybe not. Does your corn flower rise above the pumpkin vines?

My tomatoes went in late both this and last year so not sure I can be good judge. They are ripening nicely now though. The cornflowers are planted in a different bed to the pumpkins, but the two would look good together.

O dear, I misread the bit about the cornflowers as the seeds being scattered on ‘their’ (pumpkin) bed, so of course, that made me think about what the end result would be, based on the size of my pumpkin vines. Next time I have a question like that, I’ll go back & read what was actually written!

Such pretty flowers. And the squash — with unpredictable weather, you just may get a a good size. My pumpkins usually set out their fruit in October — masochists of the vegetable world.
