We know when spring is coming when the frogs arrive back in the garden pond. Last year they were late (early March), but this year they are already back in force – first ones arrive earlier in the week.

Common Frog
There appears to be a little fewer than last year – about 100, compared to around 120 last year. They are not easy to count though so it is just an estimate!
Hurray!

Spring has come when the frogs come marching in. You have an awful lot of frogs! I don’t think that hot spell last year can have helped them.

No,i agree it may not have helped. though we didn’t have it as hot as the east, but it could explain why numbers are down this year. Still a healthy population of slugs control.

I love frogs! Even though they hide under the plants for shade, and scare me with a ribbit before I see them.

I like them too. My young daughter annouced the other day that “frogs are cool”, which sums it up nicely.

I don’t often see frogs, it must be lovely to have them visit!

How lovely to have a pond populated by frogs. I wonder if I will have any at any point. Probably not this year, as my pond is rather late in being finished off but I have seen toads in the garden before. Not for a few years, though.

I am sure the frogs will find your pond for next spring – fingers crossed!

Happiness embodied to see them. We have had 1 or 2 in our pond but I fear we’re not stocked properly like you with all the right plants etc. Put some tadpoles in a few years ago but they were all eaten by the newts. I’m guessing your frogs migrate to your pond when they’re bigger?

Yes, most of the frogs have moved out already. They really only come to pond to spawn. We’ve plenty of hedges, long grass and other habitats for them to live the rest of the year:)
