In previous years, I have written about our sea buckthorn crop. This year, we (well more correctly my husband) have been much better at harvesting the berries. They are fiddly to pick due mainly to the small size of the fruit and large size of the thorns.
Sea buckthorn
We’ve been juicing the berries. While my husband is happy to drink the tart juice straight or half diluted with water, I prefer mine mixed with warm water and drunk like a tea. We have two varieties of berries, and one is definitely more palatable that the other. We have frozen some of the juice in, in ice-cube trays so that we will continue to benefit from the berries many good properties over the winter.

I’m trying to remember where I’ve seen these berries before. Does the sea buckthorn only grow near the sea? (Sounds like a silly question now that I read it…)

Not silly question at all as it pretty much grows anywhere, despite it’s name and also in various climates.

Ice cube storage is a brilliant idea. I should have done that with the cornelian cherry juice.

Good to know that these lovely orange berries can also be used to drink and so take internally. So far I had only known it as an oil (Weleda) which I used to use sometimes for leg pains.

Your can use the leaves of the bush too to make tea. An overall very useful plant.

Sea buckthorn is a truly unique flavour. Great to see you putting it to good use here. Have you tried mixing the juice with other fruits?

No, haven’t done that yet, but could imagine some good combinations. Any you would recommend?

Apple is a classic but not sure of other good ones yet. I’m going to try out some different combinations this month.

I was thinking apple would be good and there are some left on the trees (and some frozen berries in freezer). I was wondering about raspberry. There are still a few autumn ones though quality is no longer the best.
