December Sun!

We actually saw the sun this morning! I think this may be the first time in December that we have had a sunny dawn. I was thinking of our ancestors and how they would cope without light. We are so lucky to have electric lights and warm houses, and yet I struggle with these grey days in the depths of winter.

Sun!

Sun!

I wonder how I would have managed with candles, turf fires, no insulation except for thick stone walls? I think our ancestors were made of hardier stock.

Very true Miranda – glad you saw the sun today too – I think we had about an hour before the clouds came in!

I think the same thing, the lack of light and damp chill can be so oppressive. When the cold got into their bones, I think our elderly ancestors must have suffered mightily– risk of mortality was higher no doubt.
Glad you had at least a bit of sun! I, too, am grateful for our lights and warm stove to enjoy along with a warm cup of tea! 🙂

Not to mention the good old Liberty Bodice – an inch thick vest – which kept us warm in pre-central heating days. Hard to get on & off, I remember putting it on back to front once & there it remained for the day. At the age of 7yrs I refused to be the last child in the class to wear it & that was that. Sounds like a History lesson but it was in the fifties!

At this point I just need the light of the sun – I don’t mind not having heat, it’s supposed to be winter after all. But is has been so grey here, with just rare glimpses of the sun for what feels like weeks:(

Time to call on the spirits of winter solstice–a little wild uninhibited dancing, some drumming, a little hot spiked cider, perhaps some burnt offerings . . . Hey, at least it’ll warm you up, and who knows, just maybe dispel the clouds. And don’t forget to stock up on the vitamin D!

Ahh, wise words Melissa. I actually took a double dose of Vit D the other day – I figured it wouldn’t do any harm!
